EASY OIL PASTEL DRAWINGS

What is oil pastel

Oil pastel is a painting and drawing medium for creating color art with characteristics similar to pastels and wax crayons. Oil pastels are thick, greasy sticks of pigment blended with a mineral oil binder. Oil pastels may be applied and blended in many ways to achieve different effects, hues, and textures. These can be used to create abstract drawing, nature drawing , oil pastel art, texture art etc. Oil pastels can be used directly in dry form; when done lightly, the resulting effects are similar to oil paints. Once applied to a surface, the oil pastel pigment can be manipulated with a brush moistened in white spiritturpentinelinseed oil, or another type of vegetable oil or solvent. By using a solvent (50/50 turpentine and linseed oil) with oil pastels, one can achieve results similar to painting without actually using brushes and paints.

Types of oil pastels

There are two types of pastels

·         oil
·         soft (or chalk)

Surface for oil pastel drawing

Oil pastels can be used wet or dry on any support: paper, board, canvas, glass, metal, wood. . . or rock. Paper is most commonly used. The tooth or texture of the paper also affects the finished image. A heavier tooth or rougher texture of the paper can produce a grainy image while a smoother texture creates a sharper image .

Creating oil pastel drawing

 Palette and knife

Use a palette knife to cut off pieces of the oil pastels you wish to blend. Use the palette knife to blend or mix the colors together until they form a thick, oily paint. Apply one color of oil pastel directly onto your canvas or paper. Apply a second color of oil pastel directly next to the first color. Use your tool of choice to blend, or rub, the adjoining edges together until the two edges appear smooth.

Underpainting and scraping down or sgraffito

Apply multiple layers of oil pastels in various shades of colors to your paper or canvas. Often, the last layer is a dark color. Select a pointed object of your choice, such as: a paper clip, a comb, or a wooden stylus. Use this sharp item to scratch away the layers of oil pastels, leaving behind an intricate design.

Layering and blending

Building up layers of color with the oil pastel, called layering, is a very common technique. Then one of the below methods are used for blending

Difference between oil pastel drawing and crayons drawings

Crayons

·         Hard
·         Uses wax as binder

Oil pastels

·         Oil pastels use non-drying oil and wax
·         They really mix together, very well
·         Much pressure isnt needed at all to colour the required sketch and happens very smoothly.
·         oil pastels almost work on any surface paper, board, canvas, glass, metal, wood or rock.
